Summoning Magic Skill

(A-) 417 Native Skill Cap at Level 99

There are quite a few benefits to having a high Summoning Magic Skill, making it incredibly important to cap for a number of reasons.

•It lowers interruption rate while casting summoning magic
•It increases avatar accuracy when skill is above the base skill cap
•It increases the AI of Elementals and shortens the time between their casts
•It increases the amount of MP absorbed when using Elemental Siphon
•It increases the potency of Avatar's Favor (See Below)
•Increase in buff time of Alexander's Perfect Defense (See Below)

Blood Pact Ability Delay

When using a Blood pact, there is a recast timer of 60 seconds for each category. Blood Pacts are divided into two categories, Rage and Ward, each with its own separate timer.

The delay of both categories can be reduced to a soft cap of 45 seconds primarily by utilizing an abundance of equipment with the "Blood Pact Ability Delay -" stat.

Although there are other means of reducing the timer to the same soft cap, they are situational at best.

The delay of both categories can be FURTHER reduced to as low as 34 seconds by utilizing a very limited selection of equipment with the "Blood Pact Ability Delay II -" stat.

Blood Pact: Rage

Physical Blood Pacts: Attention should be focused on gear that directly affects: Blood Pact Damage, Avatar/Pet Attack, Avatar/Pet Accuracy, Avatar/Pet Double Attack and Summoning Magic Skill for added Accuracy. Additionally, Avatar TP does not affect physical blood pacts.

Magical Blood Pacts: Attention should be focused on gear that directly affects: Blood Pact Damage, Avatar/Pet Magic Attack Bonus, Avatar/Pet Magic Accuracy and Summoning Magic Skill for added Accuracy. Additionally, Avatar magic damage is greatly affected by TP.

Flaming Crush: This Blood Pact requires its own description because it's one of only a few... and arguably the only important... Hybrid Rage Pact. It consists of one strong first physical hit which has an -en like magical quality a second purely physical hit. Therefor, all of the above-mentioned factors for both Physical and Magical Rage damage apply to it. Its unique nature allows for massive damage potential if utilized properly.

Blood Pact: Ward

Healing Blood Pacts: Healing Potency is affected by Avatar TP.

Support Blood Pacts: Attention should be Focused on gear that augments Summoning Magic Skill due to its direct effect on buff duration.

Offensive Ward Pacts: Attention should be focused heavily on Summoning Magic Skill and gear that affects Avatar Magic Accuracy.

Perpetuation

An Avatar's perpetuation cost will rise in proportion to the Summoner's level and varies between Avatars. Elementals also also have their own perpetuation cost.

Weapons
(Optimal Choices)

Nirvana:
Summoner's Mythic Weapon. Hands down the best staff you'll ever own... and likely the only one you'll ever need.

Gridarvor
Job Specific staff obtained from the NPC Oboro in Port Jeuno in exchange for a Cehuetzi Pelt, a Mahogany Staff, an Iridal Staff, and 150 of either Plutons, Beitetsu, or Riftborn Boulders.

Tumafyrig
Obtained from Mirka, the tier IV NM from Kamihr Drifts Delve or purchased for 150k Mweya Plasm from the NPC Forri Porri in Western Adoulin (must have defeated Mirka and obtained his respective KI) . It's able to be augmented with Airlixirs at the Inventor's Coalition in Western Adoulin to add either Avatar Attk/Acc, Avatar MaB/MAcc or Avatar Attk/MaB

Balsam staff / Astralwatcher
NQ and HQ versions of the same weapon. They are the hands down best staves for Offensive Magical Blood Pacts. The only noteworthy difference between them is that Astral gets an additional +1 Avatar MaB. Hardly worth the price tag in my opinion... unless you're a perfectionist.

Ufrrat+2
Base weapon is obtained from Skirmish in Cirdas Caverns. It can then be upgraded to the +1 version by speaking to Divainy-Gamainy at the Inventors Coalition in Western Adoulin and paying a fee of 500 Bayld and 1 Vial of Translurry (KI) obtained from Yorcia Weald Skirmishes. It can be further upgraded to it's +2 by speaking to Divainy-Gamainy again and paying a fee of 500 Bayld and 1 Vial of Transmelange (KI) obtained from Outer Ra'Kaznar Skirmishes. The staff can be further augmented (randomly) by talking to... you guessed it... Divainy-Gamainy again... trading him the +1 staff along with a Wailing Stone (NQ +1 or +2)... and paying a fee of ~500 Bayld.

Keraunos
A possible drop from the NM Mistmaw Leraje in the Rala Waterways Alluvion Skirmish. It can be further augmented (randomly) by speaking with Divainy-Gamainy and trading him the base weapon and a corresponding Leaf/Snow stone and paying a fee of 50 Obsidian Fragments for each attempt. For Summoners, the SnowORB/LeafORB Stones are (pretty much) the only ones we care about due to pet based stats.

Magian Staves
Largely Obsolete these days, they still warrant a nod. Until SoA was launched, the only thing better than a full set of these was getting Nirvana.

ELEMENTALS

Elementals will cast Black & White magic in accordance to the level of the Summoner. The time between casts and the AI are affected by SMN Magic Skill.

The Light elemental functions differently from the rest. It gets access to up to Cure V and Curaga IV. It can ignore the standard period between cast times when party members are in critical condition. It also has access to Haste, Protect V and Shell V which can target alliance members.

The Dark elemental uses standard Dark Magic Skill spells which include the Dark Knight exclusive Absorb spells.

Avatar's Favor

A Job Ability unlocked at level 55. Only usable with a perpetuating avatar already summoned. After activation, it remains in effect for 2 hours, until zoning to a new area, upon death or simply canceling the effect manually from the status menu. The ability itself grants an Aura centered around the Summoner's Avatar. Each avatar has its own unique aura when active. This aura will affect party members within 10 yalms of the Avatar.

Some key facts about this ability:
• Avatar Perpetuation Cost is increased while this ability is active: Carbuncle costs 2 more MP/tic while all other Avatars cost 3 more MP/tic
• Avatars do not receive the effects of their auras
•Wearing the Caller's Horn +1/2 will increase the effect of the Favors
•Potency will reset when an avatar is released or killed
•Effects increase based on the MP cost of BPs used while Avatar's Favor is in effect until it reaches the cap. The cap is based on your current summoning magic skill.

Astral Flow

Summoner's 1 Hour ability. A 3 minute status. While in effect, all perpetuation cost will be removed.
All Avatars, save for Atomos will have access to a signature blood pact accessible only during Astral Flow. Use of one of these Blood Pacts costs (Summoner's Level x2 MP). However... that cost is only a minimum requirement. Successfully unleashing an Astral Flow Blood Pact will consume all of the Summoner's remaining MP.

Carbuncle, Fenrir, Ifrit, Shiva, Ramuh, Titan, and Leviathan's blood pacts will deal magic damage of their respective element. The Avatar's TP will increase the damage dealt. Although all of them deal AoE damage, the damage itself is largely underwhelming and although these can be repeatedly used within the 3 minute timer, players will often opt to use just about any other BP instead.

Fortunately, the usefulness of Astral Flow has been somewhat revived with the addition of 3 of the 4 new Avatars! Of course I'm talking about those of Alexander, Odin and Cait Sith. These are only available to Summoners of level 75+, still consume all of the Summoner's Remaining MP upon use and still require Astral Flow be in effect.

Alexander will use Perfect Defense, granting the party a decaying immunity to all forms of damage as well as debuffs. The duration has a base of 30 seconds with another second added on for every 20 Summoning Magic Skill. Damage reduction and resistance rates vary based on the Summoner's remaining MP upon activation.

Odin will use a frontal cone attack called Zantetsuken that has a chance to instantly KO any enemies within range. The higher the number of mobs in range, the higher the rate of failure. If this attack is being used against a notorious monster it will instead deal damage. Damage varies with the Summoner's remaining MP.

Cait Sith will use Altana's Favor which grants Arise and Reraise III to all party members within the area of effect.

After either Perfect Defense, Zantetsuken or Altana's Favor are successfully activated, the Astral Flow affect will end the summoner's MP will Fall to 0.

Astral Conduit

Summoner's other 1 hour ability. Upon activation of Astral Conduit, your BP recast timers will reset to zero (even if you just used one) and will remain at ready to spam for a full 30 seconds. Because of the required "Charge time" between "Activating" a BP and the moment the BP actually "Fires", its possible to squeeze in up to 9 or 10 BPs.

Elemental Siphon

A job ability that absorbs MP from a summoned elemental spirit. The potency of this effect is altered by the amount of Summoning Magic Skill you have at the time of activation.
Additionally the Caller's Pigaches +2, Tatsu Sitagoromo Augmented with Elemental Siphon +20, and the Conveyance Cape from Wildkeepers Reives/Incursion all enhance Elemental Siphon's effect.

The formula to calculate MP return from Elemental Siphon:
(Summoning Magic Skill - 50) * Weather(single:10% double:15%) and Day(10%) bonus, Cap for bonus/penalty is 35%)

Apogee

Summoner's newest Job Ability. Upon activation, it increases the MP cost of the next BP used by 50%, but reduces the recast timer to zero.

Merits

Group 1:
5/5 in Magical Attack is highly suggested because it offers the most potent increase of your performance. The remaining 5 are up to your playstyle. When you solo a lot you better put it in physical Acc, if your mainly a support for your party/alliance MAcc is the way to go.

Group 2:
There is a lot more freedom here. My best advice I can offer is to pick two, or at most three to upgrade. Spreading out your merits will make these much less useful.

With the advent of Adoulin there have been a vast number of new enemies lining up with a bone to pick with you and your avatar.
With a Wild Keeper Reive weak to each element there's now a reason to be made for owning each different merit BP where there was not so much one before.
It is up to you if you choose this route of jack of all merit BPs master of one.
If you wish to specialize in some elements more so than overs then Shiva, Ramuh, and Garuda are fine choices.

•Shiva receives a potent boost from Atma of the Beyond in Abyssea as well as having three useful wards.
•Ramuh primarily for his nice AoE stun.
•Garuda has one of the best physical BPs on top of AoE haste and curega.

Job Points

Unlike Merrits you can max out all categories in Job Points. It's a time intensive grind, so is it worth it for Summoners? Yes it is. All four of the so far released categories help you in boosting your zerg-quality of Astral Conduit.

•While using Astral Flow Avatars and Spirits have increased attributes by 3 per point
•While using Astral Conduit you gain 1 percent boost of damage for Rage pacts and duration for Wards per point
•Avatar/Spirit Accuracy Bonus increase by 1 per point
•Avatar/Spirit Mag. Acc. Bonus increase by 1 per point
•Avatar/Spirit Attack Bonus increase by 2 per point
•Elemental Siphon Effect increase by 3 per point
